CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
To Britain
Deep within his heart Joseph knew that the Christ mission could not remain based only in Gaul. The country of Gaul, although it was sacred and would always be profoundly associated with the mission of âThe Wayâ, bore spiritual links with Britain where he had an ancestral root and a vast number of friends and associates, many of them very highly placed, to which historical records bear witness. (Joseph had connections with all the ruling families of Britain and his daughter Anna was married to the kingâs youngest brother. Eventually, all of Josephâs children married into British royal households.) It was Britain that was calling him, for whose land and peoples he had a natural affinity and love.
To encourage him further, a British druidic delegation of bishops (bishopry was originally a druidic concept) travelled to Marseilles to greet him and to offer a formal invitation to bring the new teachings to Britain. They promised him the gift of land, a safe haven and long-standing protection from the antagonism of the Romans who, although they had twice been ousted from British shores, continued to covet the mysterious isle and would renew their attentions for a third time under the command of Aulus Plautius only seven years after the arrival at Glastonbury of Joseph and his companions. These pledges were made to Joseph on behalf of his good friend King Gweirydd (the original St George), Prince of the Royal Silurian dynasty whose dominions extended over Cornwall and South Wales. After some months, and after procuring another boat more seaworthy than the first vessel which had taken something of a beating on the high seas, Joseph and the disciples set sail for the English coast, this time accompanied by the druidic delegation which had aided them since they had landed in Gaul.
Mary and her group at Provence joined him, although her brother John would shortly return to Gaul to set up a mystery school whose beautiful and mystical teachings, together with those of Mary, were to be so hideously repressed by the Albigensian Crusade and the Church of Rome. The party landed on the coast some miles from Glastonbury, which was an important cultural centre of the Druids and well known to Joseph. This land had been venerated by them as deeply sacred for hundreds of years, and was holy ground long before the Druids had organized themselves in Britain.
Glastonbury1 at that time was an island called the Isle of Avalon â The Place of Apples, a fruit deeply sacred to the Goddess, as its association with Eve, the Lady of Life, attests. Two thousand years ago it was surrounded by freshwater wetlands, land which was covered in expansive tranquil lakes from the tor to the sea, 25 miles away. The area exuded a magical calm and beauty, and was surrounded by ancient forest (the tor itself was wooded in Neolithic times).
Avalon was an island created and blessed by the sea, so potently associated with Mary Magdalene and indeed with all
